The Vinery

The Vinery is a private residential project in Southams, Devon.  The commission was to design and manufacture several pine glulam arches set out to create a half cylindrical nissan hut style building.

The beauty of this design is in the manufacturing of the arches. By taking the traditional I beam shape and combining it with the benefits of curved glulam, we created a curved glulam I beam.

If this were to be created in steel it would be extremely heavy and very expensive, but by using glulam and a CNC cut OSB web, we were able to create a solution which was lighter, more cost effective and more eco-friendly for the build.

The design comprised 24 curved I beam arches, which were integrated with ridge beams to reinforce the structure and lintel beams to create openings for the windows. This all sits on perimeter beams constructed from glulam and tensioned with steel tie bars.
