Job brief

At our home in Devon, our team of designers, structural engineers, project managers, carpenters and joiners all work under one roof to design, manufacture and install bespoke glulam structures.

We provide glulam for the broadest range of project needs, from a single beam to the design, manufacture and installation of equestrian-sized arenas.

We are looking for someone to help us with an increasing workload, both on answering the enquiries coming in and also to help manage projects from design through to completion.

We have put a large salary range on the role as will consider people with a good academic record but little experience through to those with experience in a similar field. As our industry is quite niche we would expect to give training on all the tasks listed below.

Responsibilities

  • Producing quotes from incoming drawings- listing beams, metalwork, carpentry, finish costs and installation costs.

  • Get prices from the various suppliers and subcontractors for work to be outsourced.

  • Liaise with customers to establish appropriate schemes/ specs/ scope of our work.

  • Following up quotes/ keeping track of them using Pipedrive.

  • Do some drawing work for illustrating quotes where needed. (Autocad or Sketchup)

  • Project managing of certain jobs that are assigned to you- ensuring design is progressed to program, arranging order/ quote of long lead time materials, deciding on the best manufacture route for the frame. Lining up installers (usually subcontrcators) to do the job. Keeping progress tracking up to date on Smartsheet.

  • Checking/ responding to clients on contracts.

  • Act as first point of contact for customers and subcontractors during the design, manufacture and installation of the project.

  • Hand over of projects to manufacture team once designs have been approved.

  • Keeping an eye on costs and material orders against budgets as the manufacture progresses.

  • Answering or coordinating design queries from the production team as manufacture proceeds.

  • Allocating installers and helping to coordinate the deliveries/ site work and necessary plant, delivery vehicle or hire requirements.

  • Visiting site to handover completed projects or troubleshooting.

Requirements

A background or some experience in a similar role would be beneficial, but if you have little work experience but have a strong academic record with a degree including a mathematical element you would still be considered.

We can adjust the job description to include structural engineering or draughting/ design technician tasks if you are interested in the role but are looking to maintain or develop design skills.

Estimating and project management remain the core responsibilities, but we are happy to tailor the role to suit the right person.

Previous experience and qualifications as listed below are helpful but not essential – at Buckland we aim to hire the person we think is best for the team, skills can always be taught.

  • Experience as estimator or similar position
  • Familiarity with financial and project management principles
  • Maths and IT ability with an analytical mindset
  • Good communication and negotiation abilities
  • BSc/BA in engineering, construction science or relevant discipline
  • Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) will be an asset
