In 2021 Buckland created a new role of Operations Manager, and appointed Ian Halsey to the role. Here we ask him a few questions to get to know him a little better.

How long have you been working for Buckland and what do you do?

I started as Operations Manager at Buckland in November 2021. My job is to oversee day-to-day operations on a company-wide basis, and I monitor, analyse, and improve the business’s production systems and processes, to help make workflows more smooth and efficient.

Do you have any specific qualifications for your role?

I have a Diploma in Business-Improvement Techniques, a GNVQ in Engineering as well as a good many years experience doing similar roles in other businesses.

Why did you decide to go into this industry?

At Buckland Timber, we produce quality, sustainable and visually pleasing construction solutions with a small business personal touch – the opportunity to be part of a business that covers everything from small house extensions to enormous commercial constructions appealed to me.

What does your job involve?

A better question might be what doesn’t it involve! I am involved in and oversee most elements of a project from when a customer makes an initial enquiry right through to installations onsite.

What’s a favourite project you’ve worked on?

It’s still early days but when I joined we were just finishing the test fit of a high profile landmark project. It was fascinating, but unfortunately, I can’t share it with you at the moment as it’s under wraps!

What skills do you use in your work?

I am a very methodical worker which is a big advantage in my line of work. Working methodically resolves issues, but also helps create solutions as by having an eye on the whole process I can often identify patterns or pressure points.

What are the best things about the job?

It sounds cheesy but working with a great team that is passionate about what they do.

What is the worst thing?

Sawdust. It gets everywhere!

What do you like doing in your spare time?

Outside of work, I like to spend time with my daughter on bike rides or in the garden
